Galaxy Zoo Talk

Here's all the great stuff I find :D

Anyone has any idea what this is?

Do you have an AGZ reference?

Here's SDSS J025136.65+440925.4, which is the brightest part of the green cloud, top right:

    enter image description here

This, and the red blob just above the yellow-white star, could be background galaxies^, likely z >~ 0.4 (based on their colors). The blue-green fuzzy cloud could be a LSB (low surface brightness) irregular galaxy, or a nebula in our own galaxy. Or something else (there's nothing in NED).

Well worth posting over in the GZ forum, perhaps in Newbies, Post your Interesting objects/queries here. (The Newbies Thread)

    Happy hunting! 😃

I'm sorry, but I have absolutely no idea what an AGZ reference is.. I tried google, but I didn't find any relevant explanation..
I'm following your advice to post it in the forum, thank you 😃

  • Bloody_Angel by Bloody_Angel translator

Ok, so I've been enlightened, here it is: AGZ00029GU, although the green object isn't the object that was required to be classified, you can only see it when you follow up on SkyServer

    Glad I could help.

    here it is: AGZ00029GU

One of the most annoying things about the way GZ/Talk works is that the letters in these IDs are presented as uppercase, yet for the URL to work, they must be lowercase! 😦 So the ID should be AGZ00029gu

although the green object isn't the object that was required to be classified

That's often the case, but the AGZ ID is a good place to start ... the (RA, Dec) coordinates of the center of the field (or of the object) is better, but only if you know how to find them!

    Happy (continued) hunting! 😃

Hey Bloody_Angel, maybe you want to change the name of this thread ! 😄

    Posted

  • Bloody_Angel by Bloody_Angel translator

That's a good idea 😃 any suggestions? I'm assuming that 'here's all the great stuff I find' is already taken 😄

LOL ! Just go for it ! I just thought that 'What's this' wasn't a very good description anymore! 😄

My attempts to get some of the IDs for these super-cool objects. First SDSS J124357.82+321009.7 (a source near the nucleus); the galaxy is NGC 4656:

    enter image description here

SDSS J125256.01+111351.5 (the nucleus, I think); the galaxy is NGC 4762

    enter image description here

SDSS J141556.25+230314.5 (a source near the nucleus); the galaxy is UGC 09128:

    enter image description here

This last one is both very rare and interesting ... unlike almost every other galaxy in SDSS, you can see (resolve) some of the individual stars; that means it must be very close to us. NED gives the median estimated distance as ~2.4 Mpc, which puts it almost close enough to be a member of the Local Group, along with our own Milky Way, the Andromeda galaxy (M31), M33, and a few dozen other galaxies (in SDSS images of these, stars are easily resolved). Yet it is not normally listed as a Local Group member (despite what this Hubble webpage says.

When I discovered Galaxy Zoo I could barely make the difference between galaxies 😄 and funny thing, now I understand almost everything you wrote 😃
Thanks for taking you time to identify them 😃 I know I was curious about them 😃
I just found another one who looks a bit similar to the third one enter image description here

I think I know too ... but why not share with other zooites who read this thread (the what of what it is you found)?

I assumed I was the only one who didn't know what it was..anyway, that particular object is the owl nebula according to google 😃

Several of the really cool objects you've posted are nebulae, in our own galaxy. Over in the GZ forum, there's a very cool thread with lots of these: The Nebulae Collection (formed from many threads). I wonder if you've come across some nebulae that are not posted in that thread?

I seriously doubt that 😃 but then again, you never know.. I'll have to check one day..
meanwhile, there's another pretty one 😃

If this was MWP, I'd probably mark it as an ego. But in these SDSS images it is probably an artifact. 😄
