    Well the weird thing is the spaces between stars are so large, than anyone living on a planet around a star in one of those systems would likely just get a beautiful sky show - nothing bad happens to really any of the stars or planets in these collisions.

    If I'm honest I'd quite like to live there to see the show - although it would mess up observations of the other galaxies in the Universe, so I would miss that!

    When I said I wouldn't like to live in these galaxies, I was concerned with the UV light and X-rays. Agree that the night sky would be amazing.

    And then there's all the radiation from all the supernovae ... being even a light-year from a core-collapse supernova would surely be no fun at all (and if that supernova also produced a gamma ray burst (GRB), and if you were hit by the GRB head-on, wouldn't your whole planet be severely damaged?).
