Possible merger?

  I came across this picture and couldn't tell if it's a galaxy that is currently going through a merger event. The object in the center appears to have come through the sideways vertical object and has brought debris with it.

  If that was true than the galaxy on the left would have been distrupted aswell. So I don't think this is a merger.

  I was wondering what was happening here. The galaxies are clearly close to each other but there's not any overt sign of a merger. I'm wondering why there's such an abundance of debris in between the two brighter galaxies.

  It is possible that these two galaxies are actually very far apart and that it is just a line of sight. No merger for me.
