Lensing or no lensing?

  • Furiat by Furiat

Seems like there is a lensing at the ring edges. Or are the bulges within the edges?

    Hi @Furiat - welcome!

Sadly, this is not an example of gravitational lensing, but it is very interesting non the less!

Here is the colour image from SkyServer:

    enter image description here

With gravitational lensing, we would find that the colour of the lensed quasar / galaxy would be very different to the lens galaxy (the large galaxy in this image) as both the objects are at different distances. The lensed object would be a lot further away, so it would be "redshifted" to a different colour.

As for the bulges in this image, I initially thought of ansae (bright area or handles that you could find at the ends of a bar), but the orientation of the bar in this image does not match up with the bulges. The colour of the bulges are also slightly different, and I am wondering if the right one is in fact an overlapping galaxy.

I will someone else to have a look 😃
