odd formation

What is this strange formation? Is it some effect of gravitational lensing (and if how?) or an arbitrary lining-up of different galaxies?

It is many stars in our own galaxy. The software can't tell the difference between 4 stars and a galaxy. That is why we have Galaxy Zoo, to describe what we are seeing. The funny colours are an artifact of overexposure and misaligned filter stacking. Next time, mark as star / artifact.
For gravitational lensing info,. See the Spotter's guide in SpaceWarps http://spacewarps.org/#/guide
