  This is an Illustris sim (read about these in this recent GZ blog post).

  These sims use real SDSS 'backgrounds', chosen at random. In this case, the background is close to a bright star (off-stage, top-left), which is causing the redness, and the red streak (it's a diffraction spike, a kind of optical artifact commonly seen in astronomical images of bright stars).
