This is an Illustris sim (more on this, really cool, project in this recent GZ blog post, and links therein). It looks, to me, like a merger of two galaxies, both possibly disk ('spiral') galaxies originally. The merger looks only vaguely like the often spectacular mergers you see in SDSS or DECaLS images, because of the limitations of the Illustris sims. For example, you won't see any dustanes in these sims because dust is not modeled realistically; too, the fate of GMCs (giant molecular clouds) - which, when they collide in mergers often produce stunning star clusters and starbursts - is poorly modeled in Illustris.
