Merging

  The two stars merging and overlapping the galaxy, are they able to be seen from the galaxy or are they a long distance away from the galaxy?

  The two orange objects are indeed foreground stars from our galaxy. And because they are foreground stars from our galaxy they are obviously a very long distance away from the cenral galaxy. Also, both these stars are not merging, they only appear to be touching.
