    Does the center of this look almost square, or is it just me?

    I would say it looks X-shaped. It happens when two galaxies are nearly merged together.

    Yes, it looks square but the reason is not explained by Illustris.

    There are strange simulations in Illustris. Square galaxies, rings of starforming areas. These galaxies do not resemble reality. Some of their galaxies look realistic.
