Merging elliptical and Spiral?
-
by Admino
Hi,
I have described this one as a merger, guessing that an elliptical and a spiral galaxy are merging...
But is that really the case?
I would love to hear someone else's opinion. Thanks

If they were merging, their shape would be changing.

Hi Budgieye,
ok, this simulation I know, really good, but there must be a time before they merge.... or not?
But if they are not merging, what is happening there? Just overlapping?
I somehow really like this photo, that's why I would like to know more about it 😃Thanks

Hi Admino,
To 'know' if they are merging, we'd need to know that they are physically near each other in space (not just projected). Tidal features are a good clue, as are any other signs of disturbance between them. Since we only have a spectrum pointed at the face on galaxy, we can't know for sure.
If I had to hazard a guess, based on their very similar colors, it is possible they are near each other in space (at least part of the same group), but if they are on a path to eventual merger, there aren't any clear signs in the SDSS image.
