I'm thinking satellite trail.

No bright star nearby to make refractive spikes, so I would say satellite trail.

Would the trail be seen on top of the galaxy? Satellite trail is likely, but is it underneath the galaxy?

Ha, that's a tricky question! The trail passes across the galaxy and further. But when it gets in front of the galaxy, the trail seems to disappear because the bright light of the galaxy takes over, I suppose.

I found another one on the old forum
And another thread where Edd explains it : http://www.galaxyzooforum.org/index.php?topic=10173.msg108929#msg108929

It just reminded me of something (vaguely! 😉 ) And the search on the old forum really does work (I only had to wade through 5-6 pages of 25 with the search term satellite !

This is wonderful, Els, well done! 😄
The original Galaxy Zoo forum contains a true treasure trove of stuff, from almost any perspective, scientific, historical, personal, and many more; I think it would be well worth the effort to convert it to something more stable and robust ... and searchable!
