The Blue-Red Pills Thread (BRP)

  EDIT: because the first collected objects were mainly red and blue it is called the BRP, but this thread is ofcourse for all galaxies that look bi-coloured no matter what colours they are. It seems they are more common at z= 0.08 and up, so the GAMA-KiDS dataset could contribute to a significant amount of these strange galaxies.

  I've come across a few galaxies that resemble pills with one blue and one red side (or other colours) with a 50/50 distribution, and also the new GAMA-KiDS images seems to reveal more of them.

  Most of them will be combinations of galaxy and/or foreground star overlaps, some might be interaction or mergers between a red and blue galaxy. Others will simply be optical artifacts. But are they all combinations of these? Or might there be galaxies that are really one half blue and one half red?

  Good questions, but first let's try to find more of these and make Neo's life easier! #BRP

  

  If you come across them just post them in here with a GalaxyZoo ID, an image cutout, a spectrum if they have one and a link to the SDSS object page. No need to post from the collection I created because I will be adding them over time after inspection.

  And if you want to discuss an individual object please create a seperate discussion thread for that object and put a link to that discussion in here, this thread is merely meant for collecting them really.

  The first object below is prime example because it looks like one object half blue half red, and it has an unusual spectrum that really doens't fit in anywhere.

  Seems like GAMA-KiDS dataset might add an additional amount, maybe a redshift / galaxy size correlation? Looks like this one is a GAMA-KiDS artifact.

  5.5.2. Individual CCD issues

  "There are two issues related to individual CCDs that noticeably affect this data delivery:

  CCD 82: this CCD suffered from random gain jumps and related artifacts until its video board was replaced on June 2 2012. Artefacts as shown in Fig. 20d are sometimes visible in the image stacks due to this problem. Photometry in this CCD can be used due to the cross-calibration with neighbouring CCDs in the dithered exposures, but part of the CCD is lost. These features are included in the image masks and affected sources are flagged.

  CCD 93: during a few nights in September 2011 (Early Science Time) one CCD was effectively dead due to a video cable problem. One observation included in this data delivery does not include this CCD: the i-band observation of KIDS_341.2_-32.1."

  Seems like a high rate of occurrance for max 2 faulty CCD's, but also doesn't look like the same issue to me ( figure 20d):

  At the moment the best explanation for me would be a kind of 'horizon effect' images can get when the telescope is aiming more closely at the horizon and atmospheric effects become visible.

  But aside from this and other natural causes such as mergers / overlaps etc. there is still a large number of galaxies in this thread that show discoloration in 2 or three different surveys scattered around the globe ( North and South America and Hawaii). These being GAMA-KiDS, SDSS and DECaLS (+PANSTARRS-1) so that rules out artifact. And these good examples also exhibit no signs of interaction, merger, tidal debris, deformation, overlap etc. Just clean pill-shaped / round galaxies divided in two by colouring, visible from multiple telescopes.

  Also in general they are on the edge of what SDSS can properly resolve so either at common minimal redshift and/ or size.

  Interesting one, looks like a foreground star or background red galaxy in DECaLS not visible in GAMA-KiDS. Can hardly believe DECaLS is that much better than GAMA-KiDS but might be a filter difference?
