    Is that a supernova?

No, that is a foreground star from our own galaxy

that large, bright 'spot' is disturbing the arm of the spiral and there seems to be a tailing smear of the whole galaxy

It is another galaxy, which disturbs this galaxy, but it isn't on this image. Go to Skyserver, click Navigate and then click "Get Image".

The bright 'spot' is a star so I do not think it any where near the galaxy #spiral very #purple on the sdss picture

Im interested like everyone else, with that brilliant spot. If it was a star in our galaxy, would it not have the spikes from telescope?

Many stars aren't bright enough for the spikes to show up on these images. In fact, most stars in SDSS don't have diffraction spikes!
