I noticed it had a peculiar ring 'attached' to the main object. Is it a nebula? What happened to it?

Great find. Looks like all that light green might be star formation and has blown a hole in the Nebula. My thoughts anyway.

I had never heard of an HH object. This is HH2A and if you go into Simbad you see a lot going on in this part of space, very active.
