  I wonder if the smaller galaxy in the image is the one that moved through? Or would it be completely disturbed after that?

  This is one galaxy : a two armed spiral with the spiral arms forming a ring.
  Ellipticals have no features whatsoever.

  It could be two galaxies just happened to line up perfectly - although that seems unlikely, so more likely a single galaxy. 😃
