Merger or just an irregularity?

Problem solved: use the SDSS navigate tool.
I categorised this as a smooth galaxy, but how can I tell this is actually a galaxy and not an artefact?
I'm wondering: are the smaller dots galaxies or stars, and are they interacting with the center galaxy?
What exactly is happening here? Is this a #merger, or are the dots stars (seeing their colour)?
