Perseid meteor shower August 11-12 2016

  • Budgieye by Budgieye moderator

    The Perseid meteor shower should be good this year at 1am (after the Moon sets) to 4am Thursday night/ Friday morning August 11-12 2016

    http://imo.net/zhr a live graph

    Active: July 17–August 24;

    Maximum:

    August 12, 13h00m to 15h30m UT Which is evening in Asia and Australia and facing away from the shower (not good), and afternoon in Europe / Africa (not good) but good Eastern Americas, just before sunrise

    or with a different calculation, it is earlier

    August 12, 00h to 04h UT ( early morning. Think of the date of the night of Aug 11 if it is less confusing) This would be good for Europe and Africa which would be facing into the direction of the Earth's orbit after midnight. Asia and Australia would be getting too light. Not so good for Americas, as peak time would be before midnight, and they are not facing the meteor shower and the Moon would still be up.

    But go out anytime in the few days before or after, in the early early morning, and there should be some meteors.

    Perseid meteor shower : update

    Active: July 17–August 24 Look east from a dark location in the northern hemisphere, between midnight and dawn, as this is when your bit of Earth faces the shower.

    Maximum: Friday August 12, 13h00m to 15h30m UT It is early morning and dark in America, but it is in the middle of the afternoon in the UK; So Europeans and Asians have to look either the night before (night of Thursday 11/ early Friday 12) or the night after (night of Friday 12 / early Saturday 13)

    But there is are possible alternate early peaks of activity predicted for Thursday night. If they actually happen, one peak is at Aug 11 23:23 UTC (00:23 in the early hours of Friday Aug 12 for Brits) closely followed by another peak between 1-5 UTC So it may be worth a look even if you have to get up for work in the morning.

    The Perseid meteors are currently at nearly 200 meteors/ hr. Great for people around the north Pacific ocean. Not great for Brits, it is daylight. I hope it lasts until tomorrow 2am UT
