Elliptical galaxies with spirals

    I came across this galaxy, an elliptical with spiral arms, and thought it was pretty special. Thanks to those who collected it and the ones who posted a comment 😃.

    Uh.... "No other elliptical galaxy is known to have spiral arms" : http://www.cfa.harvard.edu/news/2012-29

    So what is this galaxy? A spiral with a halo of stars mimicking an elliptical galaxy, or is it an elliptical galaxy with spiral arms (caused by a merger at some time in its past)?
