Clicking on ObjID link in forum to SDSS dr7?

  • Budgieye by Budgieye moderator

I am looking up old posts in the forum. For the last month, I have had trouble calling up ObjectID from dr7. I kept being taken to the same galaxy

    For example

I find an interesting post of a spiral in the forum http://www.galaxyzooforum.org/index.php?topic=7934.0

    which has a link to

    http://cas.sdss.org/astro/en/tools/explore/obj.asp?id=588848900975558749

I click on it and I get

    http://skyserver.sdss.org/dr7/en/tools/explore/obj.asp

enter image description here and I am getting tired of always seeing this image.

I have to manually put the ObjID 588848900975558749 in the search box to get the spiral galaxy.

    http://skyserver.sdss.org/dr7/en/tools/explore/obj.asp?id=588848900975558749 yes, here it is

    http://cas.sdss.org/astro/en/tools/explore/obj.asp?id=588848900975558749 1st try for comparison

Why do I keep getting into cas jobs, instead of sky server? Is it the old forum, or is it my computer? (or me?)

I too have come across this behavior, when clicking links in the GZ forum. It doesn't happen all the time, but often enough to be quite annoying.

My guess is that it's at the SDSS end; since the links were first posted in the forum, many years' ago, the part of SDSS which produces image (etc), in the form of URLs, has undergone many changes. Somewhere among those many changes, the URLs for some objects - posted in the GZ forum - became unassociated (disassociated?) with the objects, and got replaced with the default.

A way around this, one that doesn't take too much of your time, is to have a window (or tab) open with a skyserver link, like the one you posted. Then simply copy/paste the ObjId of the object you're interested in, replacing the 588848900975558749 that's there with the new one. If you're working with a list of ~20 or more objects, semi-automation is the way to go (too boring and error-prone to keep going Crtl-C, Ctrl-V !); there are lots of different ways to semi-automate.

    Hope this helps.
