looking for the red shift in spectra I noticed that not all galaxies have this data.

£ $ € It costs money to get red shifts in SDSS, so only some galaxies are sampled. See the links below to see how spectra are made.
Additional hints to find a spectrum.
In SDSS, click on "All Spectra".
In SDSS, go into Navigate, and click on Spectra to see if another part of the galaxy has a spectra
Go into NED, and click on spectra.
Go into NED, and read some of the articles, but that is much work, especially since most are in English.
